CHAPTER 15

Arthur couldn’t believe what Lucy had just told him, that she had put her husband on a list of people who might want to see harm come to her.

He sat down heavily on a nearby chair. “Why, Lucy? Why would your husband want something to happen to you?”

“I put him on the list, Arthur, because I think maybe he’d like one of his mistresses to become his wife. At this point, he and I have a marriage in name only. I have my television show, and he has his business and mistresses.”

“But you have the house here, and you traveled here with him to host this meeting with people who are important to his company,” Dani said, as she, like Arthur, tried to figure out what this was all about.

“That is very true. We both love our home here, and I am a good hostess. I think he’s proud of my celebrity status in Hong Kong, but there’s something else.”

“What is that?” Arthur asked.

“I told Donald I would not sign a prenuptial agreement. I didn’t do it to get money or anything. It was just too cold and calculating. At the time, he was so in love with me, or so it seemed, that he agreed. I think he really resents my refusal to sign a prenuptial agreement.”

“So, what you’re essentially telling me is that if you were to divorce Donald, you would get half of his estate, but if you were to die, his estate would remain intact.”

“Yes.”

“I see.” Arthur was quiet for a few moments and then he said, “Are you worried that if you call the sheriff, he’ll tell Arthur?”

“If you were the sheriff, wouldn’t you? Never mind. No, I’m not worried that he’d call Donald. I know he’d call Donald, because Donald practically single-handedly funded his campaign to be elected as the sheriff of Kauai. Donald likes people to be beholden to him. He feels he never knows when he’s going to need to call in a favor.”

“Lucy, let me make a call. I’m going to step out in the hall. I’ll be right back,” Arthur said.

While he was gone, Dani told Lucy about the crazed woman who had broken into the studio when she was filming a television cooking show and tried to shoot her. She went on to explain how Arthur had saved her then and what had happened recently in Santa Barbara when hit men had been hired to kill her.

“Lucy, trust me on this. You are very fortunate that Arthur happened to be here during this time. He is the best, and I’m sure he’ll find out what’s going on.”

She looked up as Arthur came back into the room. “Speak of the devil,” she said, and here you are.”

“Telling tales about me, Dani?” he asked.

“Only the good ones,” she said.

“I called Jake. He has a friend with a private jet, and he’s pretty sure he can get here tonight. He also has a fingerprint kit he can use on the pillbox, plus he’s one of the best private detectives in the business, and he could be a huge help to us.
